10 curiosities you have to know about the XAREL·LO grape:
1- Variety of white grape with sweet, small and compact clusters, and a great potential for aging.
2- This grape is original from Spain, specially grown in Catalonia, in the Penedès region.
3- In the Catalan language, the variety’s name is written with an interspersed dot (Xarel·lo), but in other languages, it can be found too with a hyphen (Xarel-lo) or removed entirely (Xarello).
4- It is used for the production of the sparkling wine “Cava”, together with the traditional varieties Macabeo and Parellada. It provides a full body and structure to the wine.
5- This grape can be found from sea level to 400m. altitude.
6- It is quite sensitive to spring frosts. It is harvested in mid-September and if the maturing process is not complete, the wines may be too sour.
7- The wine made from this grape is silky, tasty, strongly flavored and consistent. The alcohol is usually balanced and it offers fresh and fruity aromas of apple, lemon or grapefruit.
8- The young wines are soft, with a silky character but full-bodied, good acidity, fruity, aromatic and excellent alcohol.
